Collins Place, Southsea, Portsmouth
The Collins Place recladding project in Portsmouth was a major initiative aimed at enhancing both the safety and aesthetic appeal of the building. Collins Place, a large, multi-occupied residential structure, is prominently located at Fratton Bridge roundabout in Southsea, Portsmouth.

The project entailed the complete removal of the existing combustible cladding, including the rainscreen, insulation, subframe, and sheathing board. These elements were replaced with non-combustible alternatives to ensure the building’s safety. The new cladding system featured Valcan VitraDual A1 Aluminium rainscreen panels in a striking combination of white and burnt orange (RAL 040 40 50), installed using the VitraFix VF1 rivet fix system. Renowned for their exceptional durability, impact resistance, and weather resilience, these panels are a versatile and safe choice for high-rise residential buildings.
Additional works included the replacement of timber decking on balconies, as well as the renewal of window and door frames. These upgrades were part of a comprehensive approach to enhance the building’s overall safety and functionality.
Lawtech, the main contractor, collaborated closely with residents to minimise disruption and ensure customer satisfaction throughout the project. They supported VIVID Homes with a Community Hub located across from the site, which served as a venue for community events, engagement, and skill-building activities. The hub hosted various youth events, providing a safe space for children and teenagers to learn new skills, build friendships, and enjoy themselves.
Valcan VitraDual panels are 100% non-combustible, achieving an A1 classification to BS EN 13501-1 and compliance with BR135 requirements. They have also been successfully tested to CWCT standards at a safety loading of 3600pa, ensuring their reliability and performance. The panels come with a BBA certificate, guaranteeing an external cladding service life of at least 30 years.
The completed project has bestowed Collins Place with a fresh, modern look while significantly enhancing the building’s safety for its residents. The combination of high-quality materials and thoughtful community engagement has made this recladding project a model for similar initiatives.
