When it comes to housing associations, many people with visual impairments are waking up in a home that is not adapted to their needs and the area of greatest risk for them is the bathroom. Here Stuart Reynolds, Head of Product and Marketing at AKW explains how social landlords can introduce simple bathroom design changes to improve the lives and safety of tenants. 

The switch from traditional tiling to installing Fibo waterproof wall panels in their bathrooms has allowed Places for People, one of the UK’s largest property management companies, to improve its installation rate by up to 133%. Providing tenants with a hygienic and maintenance-free finish.
 
The organisation owns or manages 182,725 homes and provides services to over 500,000 people. Its affordable and social housing properties, which include sheltered accommodation developments, are usually tenanted so finding a bathroom solution that would improve installation efficiency was crucial.

Given the increasing number of generations that are living under one roof (expected to account for 5.4 million households by 2040 ), this is particularly pertinent. When it comes to bathroom design, inclusive showering is a critical component of social housing.

There are currently 1.8 million UK households with several generations living under the same roof, a figure which is expected to triple by 2040 . At the same time, there are 11.8 million people aged over 65, set to become 14.3 million by 2025 .
